Divorce is a common and vexing problem. The range of feelings associated with divorce is enormous, including hurt, anger, sadness, fear and hopelessness. Divorce affects spouses, parents, children and even extended family members.
The staff at Beacon Behavioral Services works with parents, attorneys, the Court, physicians, family agencies and schools to help individuals and families manage the divorce process and resolve conflicts constructively.
We offer many services to help adults and families who are trying to cope with divorce. These include:
Evaluations to help offer input in the difficult process of evaluating appropriate custody arrangements. Professional interviews and standardized assessment instruments are used in these evaluations to assess each child's needs and the resources and skills each parent can offer the children. The results of these evaluations are then provided to the Court and attorneys.
The P.E.A.C.E. Program (Parents Equally Allied to Co-parent Effectively) is designed to facilitate cooperative co-parenting between parents who are engaged in high conflict separations and divorces. The goal of the program is to teach parents to jointly make decisions and interact in the best interests of their children. Parents meet together with a parent counselor to work on their unique situation and build healthy interaction patterns. We work closely with the attorneys for the parents and children. Divorce Coaching is intended to provide guidance and support for individual parents before, during and after the divorce process. This service focuses on the divorce process itself (rather than exploring a variety of life issues as is done in psychotherapy) and assists a parent to cope with the myriad of stresses and emotions that come with divorce process in such a way that their progress through the process is facilitated. Coaching is best utilized within the process of Collaborative Divorce, a team-centered, non-adversarial approach to resolving divorce related matters, which typically involves the services of an attorney for each parent, a coach for each parent, a financial specialist and a child specialist. Drs. Habelow and Thayer have been trained in the collaborative model and function as coaches and child specialists.
Parent Education and Consultation sessions are designed to help parents foster a cooperative and collaborative relationship. We focus on helping parents build and modify their parenting plan, deal with their children's reactions, learn the skills needed for good communication and co-parenting, and prevent the potentially devastating effects of conflict.
Parent-Child Reunification sessions are designed to help children rebuild healthy relationships with parents from whom they have been estranged. Read more about our reunification services.
Support Groups are available for men, women and children. They focus on helping participants share mutual experiences and learn behavioral coping skills. Our support groups address such topics as self-esteem, the cycle of loss, social support systems, legal resources, and the effects of separation and divorce on children.
